Plaster mouldings have been used for classical architectural design for many centuries, with prime examples going back as early as ancient Greek times. Ever since, designs have changed through the centuries. There have been key points in history that can be traced back to these different eras or classical orders. Designs are still being developed today, however most designs have evolved from the foundations of classical design.
Classic pillar and cornice design still shows these influences, with Ionic and Corinthian columns, Key and Acanthus style cornice, amongst the most popular in classical design. Each era has bought on new looks and style, which has furthermore widened the variety available as design moved into the 20th century. Edwardian, Victorian and Georgian styles all influencing the ever expanding choices available.
In later eras, plaster moulding application also widened with the introduction of niches and decorations.
